This blog post is based on a message by Pastor Todd Cosenza.
Some seasons require a reset. Not just with a spouse, child, or job, but with the Lord Himself. A relational reset with Jesus means returning to a relationship defined by His love rather than by rules. It’s about feeling His presence again, sensing His approval, and walking in the freedom and joy that come from being known and loved by God.
Why a relational reset?
Religion built on rules can point the way but cannot transform the heart. The Pharisees of Jesus’ day had turned the Law into an enormous rulebook. Jesus came for a reset — not to eliminate commands, but to move us from an external, rules-based faith to an internal, love-based relationship.
Three marks of a love-based reset
1. Light replaces darkness
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, I am the light of the world, and whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Walking with Jesus means living in His light. That light exposes what is harmful not to shame us, but to give us the chance to repent, receive forgiveness, and be cleaned and restored. Love turns the lights on so we can live in truth and freedom.
Pastor Todd illustrated this with a simple story: in a dark room you might not notice what’s moving toward you until you switch the light on. God’s light does the same. It makes the hidden obvious so healing can begin.
2. Your story is valid — God’s approval replaces people-pleasing
The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.” Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.” (John 8:13-14)
When Pharisees challenged Jesus’ testimony, He pointed out that He knew where He had come from and where He was going. If you reset into a love-based relationship with Jesus, your story becomes validated by Him.
Key truth: You do not need to live chasing human approval. God’s approval is enough. When you experience His love, you’ll gain a confidence that compliments and criticisms cannot remove. You will know where you’ve been and where you’re going in God’s story for you.
3. Freedom from judgment and the protection of His grace
You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. (John 8:15)
Jesus confronted the Pharisees who judged others by human standards. He refused to pass judgment like they did and instead offered mercy and a call to repentance. The story of the woman caught in adultery (John 8) shows this perfectly: instead of handing down the stone of condemnation, Jesus removed the shame and offered new life.
Good news: In a love-based reset, Jesus stands between us and the punishment we deserve. His protection and mercy free us from living under constant condemnation or the exhausting need to prove ourselves by rules.
What a love-based reset looks like
- Free from darkness: You live in the light of Christ. Confusion and doubt give way to clarity and peace.
- Free from needing validation: God’s approval becomes your primary identity and value.
- Free from judgment: You receive mercy, protection, and a call to genuine transformation rather than public shame.
Pastor Todd used a helpful metaphor: sunlight cleanses. The Son’s light — God’s light — sanctifies and brings life. Love changes us from the inside out; rules only work from the outside in.
Practical steps to reset your relationship with Jesus
- Turn on the light. Invite Jesus to shine His love on every part of your life. Ask Him to reveal what needs repentance and healing.
- Stop chasing people’s approval. Ask God to show you how He sees you and to root your identity in His affirmation.
- Receive mercy. Let Jesus stand between you and the consequences you deserve and walk in His forgiveness.
- Return to simple honesty. Say, “Lord, I want to reset. I need Your love more than I need rules.”
- If you have never asked Jesus into your life, this is the first reset: invite Him to be your Savior and Lord. John 3:16 reminds us that God’s actions toward us flow from His love — He gave His Son because He loves the world.
A final encouragement
This reset is not complicated. It’s not about extreme rituals or perfection. It’s a humble turning back to the love that began the whole story: God’s love at the cross. When we walk in that love, transformation follows — joy is restored, purpose is clarified, and life begins to look like what God intended.
Application questions
- Where in your life do you find yourself obeying rules out of fear rather than responding out of love?
- What is one area you need Jesus to shine His light on so you can receive healing or repentance?
- Whose approval are you chasing today, and how would life change if you rested in God’s approval instead?
- Are you willing to ask Jesus for a relational reset right now? What would that look like in your daily life?
