The heart behind sharing Jesus
If you want to walk in the fullness of what God has for you, there is a surprising key: actively sharing your faith. Philemon 1:6 says it plainly—when we are “active in sharing [our] faith,” we grow into a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ. That is not just a nice idea; it is a spiritual principle that unlocks blessing and breakthrough in our own lives as much as it blesses others.
Why sharing is the missing link
Think of your spiritual life like a heavy chain. You can be strong in prayer, powerful in worship, gifted in prophecy, and still be missing that one link. If one link is gone, the chain won’t pull the truck out of the ditch. Likewise, believers who never share Jesus with anyone outside the church often feel held back from the full measure of God’s blessings. The act of sharing is the link that completes the chain.
Scripture: Acts 14
Acts chapter 14 gives a picture of what happens when people open their mouths in obedience. Paul and Barnabas went into the synagogue and “spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed” (Acts 14:1). That passage shows two powerful realities:
- Jesus reaches everyone. The gospel touched those bound by tradition (the Jews) and those who were open and searching—the Greeks.
- God confirms the message. When people shared, the Lord confirmed the message by enabling signs and wonders (Acts 14:3).
Four truths to hold on to
1. Jesus reaches everybody
It does not matter how far someone seems to be from God—Jesus reaches everyone. Whether a person is steeped in religious rules or living in chaos, the gospel can touch them. You never know whose heart is ready to receive something different.
2. Bitterness is poison
Acts 14 also shows resistance: those who refused the gospel “stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers” (Acts 14:2). Bitterness is likened to poison because it affects everything; you cannot contain poison in one part of your body and you cannot contain the spiritual poison of bitterness in only one part of your heart. If you hold on to bitterness, it will taint worship, prayer, and your ability to share Jesus. The good news is that Jesus brings the cure. He can remove poison and heal broken hearts.
3. God confirms your simple obedience
You do not have to be a theologian or an expert in apologetics. The message Paul and Barnabas carried was the message of God’s grace. Speak about what God has done for you—His favor, His goodness, the ways He helps and provides. When you open your mouth in simple obedience, God will do the heavy lifting. He confirms the word with signs, conviction, warmth, and sometimes miraculous intervention. Your job is to be willing; His job is to reveal Himself.
4. Sharing can bring division and persecution—yet keep going
Speaking Jesus plainly can divide people and even lead to persecution. Acts 14 shows the city split and a plot to mistreat Paul and Barnabas. Jesus warned that the gospel is sometimes an offense and that it can cause conflict within households. That pain is real and temporary. It does not mean you did something wrong; often it means you did something right. Keep praying, keep speaking, and trust God to work in the long run.
Practical principles for when the Lord moves on you
- Don’t overthink it. When the Lord nudges you to speak, obey quickly. If you start questioning every impression, the moment can pass.
- Keep your words simple. Talk about grace. Tell people what God has done for you—how He helped you get out of bed, provided for your table, or gave you peace in a hard season.
- Be expectant. Expect God to confirm what you say. Expect warmth, conviction, or evidence that He is moving.
- Accept your personality. Whether you are outgoing or awkward, God made you for a purpose. You’re a vessel of the Holy Spirit. A few honest words about God’s love are enough to seed a life.
- Keep going even if you face rejection. The work continues. Paul and Barnabas moved from city to city preaching the gospel despite opposition (Acts 14:6–7). If you feel rejected by one person, God will give you another who will receive from you
What sharing Jesus really looks like in a church
Imagine a church where everyone participates—bringing people who did not know Jesus, not by transfer growth, but by encountering Christ through ordinary believers. That means leaving the safety of the building and lovingly speaking into people’s lives. When people are saved, bring them back to the church. Let the congregation grow because the gospel went out from the people, not because people simply moved between pews.
Final encouragement
There is deep release from heaven when we become active in sharing Jesus. Often a breakthrough we have prayed for comes the moment we tell someone about Christ. We are called to participate in the fullness of Jesus’ heart—His love for those who are still His enemies or who have never met Him. Be willing, speak simply, trust God to confirm His word, and watch how He expands His kingdom through you.
Application questions
- When was the last time you shared a simple word about God’s grace with someone outside your church circle? What stopped you, if anything?
- Do you recognize any bitterness in your heart that might be poisoning your ability to love and share? What step can you take this week to ask Jesus for healing in that area?
- What is one simple, personal story of God’s goodness you could share in a conversation this week?
- Who in your everyday life might be ready to hear a short, honest word about Jesus? What will you say and when will you say it?
