This blog is based on a message by Pastor Todd Cosenza.
God cares about the details of your life. He sees the decisions that weigh on you, the pain you carry, and the needs that seem enormous right now. But your life is also part of something bigger. Everything God is doing is moving toward a purpose, and you have a meaningful part in it.
Why the Bigger Picture Matters
Early in my career, I worked in pharmaceutical manufacturing and spent a lot of time revising standard operating procedures. My supervisor would tell me what needed to change in those procedures, but sometimes I could see several ways to make those changes. The work went much better when I asked what he was trying to accomplish in the big picture. Once I understood the larger goal, I could make choices that actually served it.
Our spiritual lives work that way too. Knowing God’s bigger plan helps us understand our calling and make decisions that fit what he is doing. Your part may look different from someone else’s, but it matters.
God’s Plan Is to Bring Everything Under Christ
Ephesians 1:7-10 begins with what Jesus has done for us: through him we have redemption and forgiveness, given out of the riches of God’s grace. Paul then points beyond our individual need. God has made known his purpose for the fullness of time: to bring everything in heaven and on earth together under Christ.
That is the bigger plan. God wants people saved, healed, freed, and blessed. Those things matter deeply, but they also move toward his ultimate purpose: everything fully submitted to the lordship of Jesus. When Christ’s reign is fully realized, all that belongs under his authority will be in its right place.
Why Submission to Jesus is Powerful
When life feels uncertain, you can stop and say, “Lord Jesus, I submit myself to you.” You may not know what is happening or which choice to make. Submission does not require you to have every answer. It means placing your heart, your decisions, and your future in his hands. This places you in the perfect position to receive from the Lord. It keeps you in line with God’s ultimate plan and brings a future grace and power into your life at that moment.
I have needed to do that under pressure. I have needed to do it when several options were in front of me and I was afraid of making a mistake. I have also needed to do it when someone hurt me and anger was building inside. In those moments, submitting to Jesus puts me in a position to receive his grace and follow his lead rather than be ruled by fear or pain.
James 4:7 tells us how powerful submission to Jesus is: submit first to God, then resist the devil and he will flee. Submission causes our enemy to run from us! Our authority does not come from how loudly we speak or how angry we feel. It comes from submission to the Lord to whom we belong.
Chosen: Why You Have a Part to Play
Ephesians 1:11 says that in Christ we were chosen according to God’s purpose. If you belong to Jesus, your faith is not a surprise to him. Before you were looking toward him, he was at work in your life.
Being chosen means more than having hope for heaven. It means you have a part in what God is doing now. You do not have to copy somebody else’s calling to make yours important. God can work through every part of your story, including the parts you wish had gone differently, as you trust him with your life. Being chosen means not just selected for heaven in the afterlife; it means being chosen to be a part of the bigger picture of God’s ultimate plan.
Included: You Have What You Need in Christ
Ephesians 1:13 says we were included in Christ when we heard and believed the good news of salvation. We are not merely assigned a place in God’s plan and then left to find our own way. We are included in Christ.
Think about the when there is an invitation to someone’s house. They can sit down, have food, and use what has been made available to them including electricity, water, furniture and anything else the host has to offer. In a far greater way, our place in Christ means we have access to his grace, goodness, and every provision as we do what he has called us to do.
That calling may involve raising a family, loving your grandchildren, telling someone about Jesus, serving in the church, serving outside it, or stepping into ministry. Whatever your part looks like, God has not asked you to accomplish it apart from him. Where he calls, he provides.
Marked: You Belong to God
The second part of Ephesians 1:13 says that we were marked with the promised Holy Spirit. You may not see that mark, but it speaks to whom you belong.
For years, a lot of attention in Christian culture went to the mark of the beast described in Revelation. But we should not overlook what Ephesians says about the mark God has placed on his people. The Holy Spirit marks us as his own.
That does not mean we will never face a battle. Some struggles come precisely because we are marked for Jesus, so we should not assume every hardship proves we have done something wrong. And we do not face those struggles alone. The God who marks his people also cares for and protects them.
Say Yes to Your Part
Here is what I want you to carry with you:
- You are chosen. You have a PART in God’s bigger plan.
- You are included. You have a PROVISION to fulfill that part.
- You are marked. You have PROTECTION, even in the middle of a battle.
The place to begin is simple: submit yourself to Jesus today. Thank him for your calling, trust what his Word says about you, and say yes to the part he has given you. No matter your age, your history, or the disappointments behind you, you can take your next step with confidence. God’s bigger plan includes you, and your part counts.
Questions for Reflection
- Where do you need to stop striving for every answer and submit a decision or burden to Jesus?
- How might seeing God’s bigger plan change the way you approach your calling today?
- Which truth do you most need to remember right now: that you are chosen, included in Christ, or marked by the Holy Spirit?
- What is one practical way you can say yes to your part this week?
